Dare To Create?….I Do!

This was a tough challenge but one that intrigued me enough to give it a go. Take some elements of Andy Skinner’s and Tracy Weinzapfel’s styles and create a project. The hardest part was finding a balance between the two, so that my project didn’t look like it was inspired by only one of them. And, of course, I had to use Deco Art products.Dare To Create - DecoArt Skinner Weinzapfel mixed media

My base is a MDF ‘Driftwood’ pallet art kit from Creative Expressions. The heart is a wooden hanging decoration (originally painted brown with a gingham ribbon hanger). The cogs are MDF from Calico Craft Parts, and the letters are a wooden DoCrafts alphabet. All paints, paste, glazes are from the DecoArt Media range:

To begin, I gave everything a coat of gesso to create a good base for painting. I added some patches of Crackle Paste to the heart and set aside to dry.

The Driftwood base was painted with Cobalt Teal Hue (leaving some areas white). I then added areas of Green Gold, Primary Cyan and Primary Yellow, blending slightly. Once dry I used a stencil and Modelling Paste to add the clock face. The gentleman is stencilled with Carbon Black paint.

The cogs and letters are given a rust treatment from the Timeworn Techniques class.

Once the heart had crackled I painted with Pyrrole Red, Quinacridone Red,Violet and Magenta – blending and layering to try to get some subtle depth of colour. Once dry I added Interference Violet and Magenta to the crackled areas to create an iridescent shine.

The finishing treatment on the Driftwood base is Crackle Glaze and Carbon Black Antiquing Cream.

Once everything had dried I glued the cogs to the heart, then the heart and letters to the base.

I’m really pleased with the results, my first time using some of Tracy’s signature colours, and it was fun to try and capture the spirit of both Andy and Tracy in one project. Can’t wait to see what everybody else creates as part of this challenge!
